The Research

Alberta IBD Consortium Guiding Principles:

To understand the role that genetic, microbial, and environmental factors play in the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

As a world leader in IBD research and innovation, we will make a meaningful impact on the lives of patients and their families.

Action Plan

The Alberta IBD Consortium is a vital link between clinicians, researchers, and patients across Alberta. Our well integrated and multidisciplinary research teams are engaged in basic research, clinical trials, education, and knowledge syntheses to improve patient care and enhance our understanding of the cause(s) of IBD.

Recent advances suggest that there are connections between our genetic traits, environment, and the microorganisms that live in our gut that may lead to the development of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. However, the manner in which these factors interact to cause IBD is still unclear. Our activities will generate new knowledge leading to the development of more effective treatments and, ultimately, finding a cure for IBD.
